D.J. Young was born on January 26, 1988 in Lansing, Michigan.
D.J. Young was selected to play in the 2006 Michigan High School Football Coaches Association All-Star Game while playing at Sexton High School. He was named to the Detroit Free Press All-State Dream Team and also earned all-conference honors in 2005. He was selected as him team's Defensive Player of the Year.
After Sexton High School, D.J. Young attended Bowling Green University. In 2006, he saw action in six games as a true freshman and tallied 7 tackles. In 2007, he appeared in 11 games and had 23 tackles. In 2008, he transferred from Bowling Green and enrolled at Lansing Community College. In 2009, he officially enrolled at Michigan State and started the final 11 games at right tackle.
